| Migjorn
is without a doubt the most undeveloped area on
the island and home to some of the best beaches in mallorca with long stretches of fine white sand, crystal clear waters flanked by dunes and nature reserves - and not a hotel in sight. The golden rural landscape of South
Mallorca, rich in almonds, carob and olive trees is reflected in the agricultural character
of towns such as Campos and
Llucmajor, in contrast to villages along the lines of Santanyi which has an altogether more bohemian atmosphere with shops specialising in arts and crafts. The south is traditionally
the driest area of the island which is why its habitants
turned to the sea to make their living. The seaside
villages are busy fishing ports
and the tiny coves and harbours that dot this stretch of coast
are lined with fishermans
huts. It goes without saying that local
restaurants serve only the best of the days catch.
Luckily, the majority of Migjorn has been saved
from the developers and huge stretches of the area are nationally protected Nature Reserves
where the mallorcan landscape has been left
to meet the stunning turqouise shades of the sea.
Even the marine life is protected as the areas between
Cabo Blanc, Cabo Ses Salinas and Cala Figuera have
been declared a Marine Reserve. As such the area has also become a mecca for birdwatchers.
Migjorn is ideal for lazy days on the beach, long
languid lunches and evenings under a peaceful mediterranean
sky. |

of interest |
The south is dotted with pretty fishing villages such
as Porto Colom and Porto Petra
and the villages slightly inland reflect a wonderful
mixture of both rural and coastal. Santanyi
and Felanitx are both busy market towns
with a wonderful mediterranean atmosphere.

Cabrera: This uninhabited island sits
around twenty km off the south coast of Mallorca.
The small collection of islands form the National
Park of Cabrera and can only be reached by joining
a tour or obtaining special permits. There is
an ancient castle overlooking the harbour but
the real appeal of the island lies in its stunning
wildlife and vegetation. Boat trips to the island
run from Colònia de Sant Jordi harbour.

Cala Mondrago in Santanyi: The
Nature Park Cala Mondrago takes in two beaches
with fine white sand and crystal clear water.
The spectacular cliffs and the area inland are
of great wildlfe interest throughout the year
and has become one of the main attractions of
Santanyí.

Sanctuary
Sant Salvador: Climb the hairpin bends
to the Sanctuary of Sant Salvador, perched on
a mountain top in the municipality of Felanitx.
You are rewarded wtih stunning views of the east
coast which take in Cabrera, Cap de Formentor
and several other hilltop sanctuaries dotted around
the island.
Castle of Santueri: The Santueri
Castle clings to the cliffs south east of Felanitx.
Rebuilt in the 13th century on the remains of
an Arab stronghold and with sheer drops on all
sides, it is one of the three rock castles preserved
on Mallorca today.
Es
Trenc: The Nature Park Es Trenc is to
be found south of Campos and consists of wild
sand dunes, the beach itself is a three kilometre
long sand bank with beautiful fine white sand
and crystal clear water. Although completely free
of building it has become extremely popular over
the years due to its infamy as the most beautiful
beach in mallorca.
Salobrar in Campos: The Salobrar area
consists of a group of artificial ponds employed
for the extraction of salt that join the sea at
Es Trenc beach. These saltpans act as a magnet
for migrant waders and wildfowl on their way from
Africa to their breeding grounds in Europe each
spring. Cap de Ses Salines, Mallorca's
southernmost point, is another good spot for birdwatching.
Capcorb Vell: These are the most
significant remains of the Talaiotic culture which
flourished in Mallorca between 1300 and 800 BC.
Here, just 12km south of Llucmajor you can see
five talaiots and wander around the ancient village.
Cala Figuera: Picture perfect
fishing village - it's the one you see on all
the postcards! Great views from the restaurants
cafes and bars that lead down to the harbour.
